UNIT: EVOLUTION, ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS, NATURAL SELECTION AND THE FOSSIL RECORD 12. Describe protective adaptations of animals, including mimicry, camouflage, beak type, migration, and hibernation.
Recognize and apply the definition of mimicry. (The resemblance of one organism to another or to an object in its surroundings for concealment and protection from predators.)
Recognize and apply the definition of camouflage. (The method or result of concealing by disguise or protective coloration such that the organism appears to be part of the natural surroundings.)
Distinguish between different beak types, and identify what each type is used for.
Recognize and apply the definition of migration. (The process of changing location periodically, especially by moving seasonally from one region to another.)
Recognize and apply the definition of hibernation. (The process of passing winter in an inactive or dormant state.)
Identifying ways in which the theory of evolution explains the nature and diversity of organisms
Describe the concepts of Natural Selection, Survival of the Fittest, Geographical Isolation & the Fossil Record
THE HOT DEBATE: Evolution- Did it occur simply by "chance" with a bunch of chemicals forming the first cells and things evolving from there, or was the system put in place with a specific design and purpose in mind? In school, we talk about both sides.

Darwin’s theory has been summarized by the late Harvard paleontologist and science historian, Stephen Jay Gould. According to Gould, Darwin’s theory consisted of three basic facts and one inference. The facts are: “First, that all organisms produce more offspring than can possibly survive; second, that all organisms within a species vary, one from the other; third, that at least some of this variation is inherited by offspring.” Contemporary Darwinism (also called neo-Darwinism) adds to Darwin’s original theory the notion that the favorable variations arise from random genetic mutations.
The theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as ONLY random chance through natural selection. But know that Intelligent Design is not just "faith" based to support that there is a God. It is backed up by scientific observations and current knowledge of how life works. Who was Charles Darwin?
Where did Darwin visit off the coast of Ecuador?
Explain Darwin’s idea of natural selection.
After collecting 31 finches (type of bird), he came to the conclusion that they all came from a common ancestor. Explain how the bird’s environment led to the birds developing different types of beaks, thus supporting his idea of Natural Selection. (Read text and also Fig 3 & Fig 13)
Did you Know that the woodland frog actually FREEZES and comes back to life in the spring?? If we were to freeze, ice crystals would destroy our cells. Ice crystals would form in our bodies, damaging cells and tissues. When ice crystals form in the area just outside of cells, they deform the cells and puncture cell membranes. In addition, ice is made of pure water, so as it crystallizes, it leaves behind solutes (substances that were dissolved in the water). As the solutes become more concentrated outside the cells, water inside the cells diffuses across the cell membranes through osmosis in an effort to equalize the concentrations of solutes inside and outside the cells. As a result, the cells become dehydrated from the loss of water and shrink. But NOT IN these frogs.... they have their own anitfreeze!

Frozen Frogs
In this video adapted from NOVA scienceNOW, learn how the common wood frog survives the cold winter. Wood frogs are found in the northern United States and Canada and must endure freezing cold temperatures for parts of the year. In order to survive the cold, they have a special adaptation—they are able to freeze solid without damaging their cells. Sugar acts like a natural antifreeze in their bodies, allowing them to spend the winter frozen and then resume function in the spring.

Scientific backing for Intelligent Design- Indicating that yes, species adapt and evolve over time, but there was a "creator" who put it all in motion and who set up the world to work like it does.
